The Buzzing Book by James Thompson

The Buzzing Book by James Thompson has formed the foundation of my morning warm-up for the past eight months.  In this book, each exercise is first buzzed on the mouthpiece and then played on the horn.  I start my warm-up with exercises 1-4, 9, and 12a everyday.  This routine gives me a good workout and immediately focuses my mind on issues such as tone, intonation, and air support.  Exercises 1-4 focuses on the middle and low range and contains a lot of long tones and pitch bending.  Exercise 9 covers the low range and exercise 12a focuses on the high range.  I am an especially big fan of exercise 12a because it forces me to approach the high range with a lot of air support and a correct, relaxed embouchure.

The Buzzing Book is meant for trumpet, therefore, some of the text is not applicable to horn and must be ignored.  The book comes with CDs for Trumpet in Bb and C.  I use the CD for Trumpet in Bb and then I transpose all of the exercises in the book to Bb basso.  This approach works well when you start the exercises on the open Bb horn.

I believe that The Buzzing Book is an excellent resource for all trumpet and horn players.  I had never used another warm-up book that helped me to play at my best on a daily basis until I found this method.

This is why I had not taken much note of it, as it is not a horn book. But then I saw early in the summer the post from Derek Wright that he was using it and it was making…. [...]
